Perfectly Savory Australian Vegemite Toast

  • 2 thick-cut slices of white or wholemeal bread (about 1 inch thick)
  • 1 tablespoon (14 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) Vegemite
  • Optional toppings:
  • Avocado slices
  • Tomato slices
  • Thin slices of cheddar or mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Grab two thick slices of your chosen bread (about 1 inch / 2.5 cm thick). Lightly toast them for 2-3 minutes in a toaster or 4-5 minutes in a grill pan over medium heat.
  2. While the bread is toasting, leave your unsalted butter out to soften if it isn’t already.
  3. Once your toast is warm, spread a generous layer of softened butter all over.
  4. Using a butter knife, lightly scrape a small amount of Vegemite (start with about 1 teaspoon or 5 grams). Spread it thinly and evenly across the buttered surface.
  5. Add optional toppings if desired: avocado slices, tomato slices, or cheese. For cheese, pop the toast under a broiler for 1-2 minutes to melt slightly.
  6. Serve immediately while warm and fresh.

Notes

If Vegemite is too thick to spread, warm the jar slightly in a bowl of warm water. Eat the toast immediately to prevent butter hardening and Vegemite clumping. Avoid over-toasting to prevent bitterness. Use softened butter for smooth spreading. Start with a thin layer of Vegemite to avoid overpowering saltiness.
