These bright and boozy orange cream jello shots are the perfect blend of nostalgia and grown-up fun. They start with a happy accident in my kitchen and have become the most requested item at every gathering I attend.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (3 oz) orange gelatin
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold vodka
  • 1/4 cup triple sec or Grand Marnier
  • 1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1 packet (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) unflavored gelatin

Instructions

  1. Prepare the orange layer: In a liquid measuring cup, empty the entire 3-ounce box of orange gelatin. Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and whisk for about 2 minutes until the gelatin is completely dissolved. Add 1/2 cup cold vodka and 1/4 cup triple sec. Whisk gently to combine. Set aside to cool to room temperature—about 15 minutes.
  2. Fill the first layer: Arrange 24 shot cups on a baking sheet. Pour the orange mixture evenly among the cups, filling them about halfway. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or until the orange layer is firm to the touch.
  3. Bloom the unflavored gelatin: While the orange layer sets, pour 1/4 cup cold water into a small bowl. Sprinkle the packet of unflavored gelatin over the top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes without stirring.
  4. Make the cream layer: In a small saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium-low, stirring constantly, until warm but not simmering—about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat. Add the bloomed gelatin and vanilla extract. Whisk vigorously until the gelatin is completely dissolved, about 1 minute.
  5. Cool the cream layer: Let the cream mixture cool to room temperature, stirring occasionally. This takes about 15-20 minutes.
  6. Add the cream layer: Once the orange layer is firm and the cream mixture is cool, gently pour the cream over the orange layer, filling each cup almost to the top.
  7. Set completely: Refrigerate the shots for at least 4 hours, but overnight is best. They should be firm to the touch and jiggle slightly when shaken.
  8. Serve: Pop the lids on and serve cold.

Notes

Temperature is everything. Let the orange layer set completely before adding the cream. Don’t skip blooming the gelatin. Use a liquid measuring cup with a spout. Let the cream layer cool completely. Make them the day before for best flavor.
