These quick baked apple dumplings use store-bought crescent dough and a simple cinnamon sugar sauce to deliver old-fashioned flavor in under 15 minutes of prep. Perfect for busy weeknights, they’re flaky, tender, and utterly comforting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel apples, cut in half from top to bottom, and scoop out core and seeds to create clean half-spheres. Set aside.
  3. Unroll crescent dough on a cutting board. If using perforated triangles, press seams together to form 4 rectangles. If using sheet dough, cut into 4 equal squares.
  4. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Brush each dough rectangle with melted butter, then sprinkle cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over top.
  5. Place one apple half, cut side down, in the center of each sugared dough rectangle. Fold corners up and over apple, pinching seams to seal. Place seam side down in a greased 8×8-inch baking dish, leaving space between them.
  6. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/2 cup butter pieces, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (if using), and 1 cup hot water. Stir occasionally until butter melts and sugars dissolve (about 3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and stir in vanilla and salt.
  7. Pour hot sauce over and around dumplings in the baking dish (sauce should come about halfway up sides). Bake at 375°F for 30-35 minutes, until dough is golden brown and sauce is bubbling and thickened. Tent with foil if tops brown too quickly.
  8. Let dumplings rest in sauce for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with sauce spooned over the top and vanilla ice cream if desired.

Notes

Choose firm, tart apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. Seal dough seams well to prevent apple juice from thinning the sauce. Let dumplings rest 5 minutes after baking for sauce to set. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent dough. For vegan, use plant-based butter and vegan crescent dough. Leftovers keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; reheat in microwave or oven.
