These spider cookies with chocolate crunch are the Halloween treat you didn’t know you needed. They’re fun to make, even more fun to serve, and they taste like the best chocolate cookie you’ve ever had dressed up in a costume.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed into small pieces
  • 1/2 cup mini pretzel twists, crushed into small bits
  • 24 chocolate candy melts or melting wafers
  • 48 candy eyes
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or vegetable shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  6. Gently fold in the crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and pretzel pieces using a spatula.
  7. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.
  8. Use a cookie scoop or tablespoon to portion dough into 1.5-inch balls. Place them 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes. Let cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  10. For the spider decoration: Place candy melts and coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until smooth.
  11. Transfer melted chocolate to a piping bag or zip-top bag with a tiny corner snipped. On each cookie, pipe eight small lines radiating from the center for spider legs.
  12. Pipe a small dot of chocolate in the center, then press two candy eyes into it before the chocolate hardens.
  13. Let the chocolate set completely, about 15 minutes at room temperature or 5 minutes in the fridge.

Notes

Don’t skip the chill time. Crush cookies consistently into pea-sized chunks. Watch your oven temperature. Pipe legs one cookie at a time. Use room temperature egg. Flavors improve after day one.
