A happy accident turned into the ultimate dessert hybrid: fudgy brownies meet gooey pecan pie with a warm maple-bourbon kick. These easy brownies are perfect for cozy evenings and holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted (1 stick)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 2 tablespoons bourbon
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped and toasted
  • 1 pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang on two sides. Lightly grease the parchment with butter or cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter and granulated sugar until well combined. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking after each addition until smooth. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, and salt into the wet mixture. Fold gently with a rubber spatula until just combined—do not overmix. The batter will be thick and glossy.
  4. Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly with the spatula. Set aside.
  5. In a medium bowl, whisk together the maple syrup, brown sugar, bourbon, melted butter, and the egg until smooth. Fold in the chopped pecans and a pinch of salt.
  6. Gently pour the pecan topping over the brownie batter. Do not stir—let it sit on top.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes. The edges should look set and the center should be slightly jiggly. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with a few moist crumbs, not wet batter.
  8. Cool completely in the pan on a cooling rack for at least 2 hours.
  9. Use the parchment paper handles to lift the brownies out of the pan. Place on a cutting board and slice into 16 squares with a sharp knife, wiping the knife clean between each slice.

Notes

Toast pecans first for extra flavor. Use room temperature eggs. Do not overbake—center should be slightly jiggly. Cool completely before slicing to prevent runny topping. Brownies are even better the next day. For clean slices, chill in fridge for 20 minutes before cutting.
