A quick and easy recipe for festive patriotic desserts featuring a creamy, tangy cream cheese frosting paired with fresh red, white, and blue berries. Perfect for summer parties and celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (227 g) full-fat cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup (113 g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 3 cups (360 g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (150 g) sliced strawberries
  • 1 cup (150 g) blueberries
  • 1 cup (125 g) raspberries
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • Base options: sugar cookie crust or pre-baked sugar cookies, white or yellow cake layers, brownie squares

Instructions

  1. Prepare the base: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) if baking sugar cookies or cake layers. Bake sugar cookies for 10-12 minutes or cakes for 25-30 minutes until golden and set. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely before frosting.
  2. Make the cream cheese frosting: In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese and unsalted butter on medium speed until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, beating on low speed to avoid sugar clouds, then increase to medium speed until all sugar is incorporated and frosting is fluffy.
  4. Mix in vanilla extract and optional lemon zest. Beat for another 30 seconds until smooth, creamy, and spreadable but not runny.
  5. Assemble the dessert: Spread a generous layer of frosting over the cooled base using a spatula.
  6. Arrange fresh berries on top in patriotic patterns—rows of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries or a flag design.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let the frosting firm up and flavors meld.
  8. Serve and enjoy: Slice and serve chilled or at room temperature. If refrigerated, let sit 10 minutes before serving for frosting to soften slightly.

Notes

Soften cream cheese and butter to room temperature for smooth frosting. Sift powdered sugar to avoid lumps. Beat frosting just enough to be fluffy but not greasy. Pat berries dry before placing on frosting to avoid sogginess. Refrigerate frosting if too soft before use. Frost base only when completely cooled to prevent melting.
