Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup sour cream (full-fat)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 packet ranch dressing mix
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Black gel food coloring
  • 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 large head broccoli, cut into small florets
  • 1 large head cauliflower, cut into small florets
  • 1 bunch carrots, peeled and cut into 3-inch sticks
  • 1 English cucumber, sliced into rounds
  • 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 cup snap peas or sugar snap peas (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 cup sour cream, 1/2 cup buttermilk, and 1 packet ranch dressing mix. Whisk until smooth. Add 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder and 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika, then whisk again. Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Wash all vegetables thoroughly. Cut broccoli and cauliflower into small, bite-sized florets. Peel carrots and cut into 3-inch sticks. Slice cucumber into 1/4-inch rounds. Halve cherry tomatoes. Cut bell peppers into 1/2-inch strips. Trim snap peas if using. Pat all vegetables dry.
  3. Arrange vegetables around the edge of a large serving platter in groups by color, leaving a clear 6-inch circle in the center for the dip.
  4. Spoon the chilled ranch dip into the center circle and spread evenly into a round shape about 1/2 inch thick. Mix about 2 tablespoons of the remaining dip with a few drops of black gel food coloring until dark gray-black. Transfer to a small zip-top bag, snip a tiny corner, and pipe a spiral on top of the white dip from center outward, leaving about 1 inch between rings.
  5. Take a clean, dry toothpick. Starting from the center, drag the toothpick outward through all the rings to the edge of the dip. Repeat every 1 to 1.5 inches around the circle. Wipe the toothpick clean between each drag.
  6. Place a small black olive or large raisin in the center of the web for the spider’s body. Use thin pretzel sticks or chive pieces for legs. Sprinkle fresh chives over the dip. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready.

Notes

Chill the dip thoroughly before adding the black spiral to prevent bleeding. Cut vegetables uniformly for even dipping. For a dairy-free version, use vegan sour cream and buttermilk substitute. The dip can be made up to 24 hours ahead; add the web pattern just before serving.
