These spooky spider cookies are the kind of recipe that makes you look like a hero without actually doing much work. Quick, easy, and perfect for Halloween, they use just four simple ingredients and come together in about 20 minutes.

Ingredients

  • Round sandwich cookies (about 24 cookies)
  • Chocolate candy melts (200g or about 1 cup)
  • Pretzel sticks (about 48 sticks, or 2 per cookie)
  • Candy eyeballs (about 48 eyes, or 2 per cookie)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Have your cookies, pretzel sticks, and candy eyes ready.
  2. Melt the chocolate candy melts. Place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring well after each interval, until completely smooth. This usually takes about 1 to 1.5 minutes total.
  3. Dip the pretzel legs. Take a pretzel stick and dip one end into the melted chocolate, coating about 1/2 inch (1 cm) of the tip. Gently tap the pretzel against the side of the bowl to remove excess chocolate. Repeat with a second pretzel stick.
  4. Attach the legs to the cookie. Place a cookie flat on the prepared baking sheet. Insert the two chocolate-dipped pretzel sticks into the chocolate filling of the cookie (or onto the flat side if using a non-sandwich cookie), positioning them like spider legs — slightly angled outward. Hold them in place for about 10 seconds to make sure they stick. Repeat for all cookies.
  5. Let the legs set. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
  6. Add the body chocolate. Remove the cookies from the fridge. Spoon a small amount of melted chocolate (about 1 teaspoon or 5 ml) onto the center of each cookie. Use the back of the spoon to spread it into a small circle — this is the spider’s body.
  7. Attach the candy eyes. While the body chocolate is still wet, press two candy eyes onto each spider. Place them close together near the front of the chocolate circle. Gently press down so they stick.
  8. Create the spider legs (optional detail). If you want a more realistic look, use a toothpick to gently bend the pretzel sticks slightly upward at the tips while the chocolate on the legs is still soft.
  9. Final set. Return the cookies to the refrigerator for another 10-15 minutes, or until the chocolate is completely firm. Once set, the spiders are ready to serve.

Notes

If your kitchen is warm, the chocolate will stay soft longer, and the pretzel legs might slide. Work in a cool room, or pop the cookies in the fridge between steps. Don’t over-melt the chocolate — stir every 30 seconds and stop as soon as it’s smooth. Break pretzel sticks in half for sturdier spiders. Work in batches to prevent chocolate from thickening. If a pretzel leg breaks off after setting, dab a tiny bit of melted chocolate on the broken end and reattach it.
