A simple and easy cream cheese frosting recipe perfect for Fourth of July desserts, offering a tangy and sweet balance ideal for summer celebrations.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces (227 grams) cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups (360 grams) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • A pinch of salt
  • Optional: red and blue gel food coloring
  • Optional dessert bases: vanilla or yellow cake, fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries), sugar cookie base, shortbread crust

Instructions

  1. Remove the cream cheese and butter from the fridge about 30 minutes before starting to soften.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and butter together on medium speed until creamy and free of lumps, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add vanilla extract and lemon juice, mixing for another 30 seconds.
  4. Gradually sift in powdered sugar, about 1 cup at a time, mixing on low speed to avoid sugar dust.
  5. Once all sugar is incorporated, increase speed to medium-high and beat for 2-3 minutes until the frosting is light, fluffy, and smooth.
  6. Adjust consistency by adding a teaspoon of milk or cream if too thick, or more powdered sugar if too thin.
  7. Optional: divide frosting into bowls and add red or blue gel food coloring for festive designs.
  8. Frost your chosen dessert using a spatula or piping bag.
  9. Garnish with fresh berries or edible glitter if desired.
  10. Chill the frosted desserts for at least 30 minutes before serving to let the frosting set.

Notes

Soften cream cheese and butter properly to avoid lumps. Gradually add powdered sugar to prevent sugar dust. Chill frosting before piping to hold shapes better. Store frosting in an airtight container in the fridge and re-whip before use. Use gel food coloring to avoid thinning the frosting. Keep desserts chilled until serving to prevent melting.
