Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably Dutch-processed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 2 1/2 cups (300g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk or dairy-free milk (e.g., oat milk)
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Gel food coloring in purple
  • Black decorating gel or melted chocolate for hat brim detail
  • Optional: edible glitter or sprinkles for decoration

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar: Beat 1 cup softened unsalted butter with 1 cup granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 to 4 minutes.
  2. Add egg and vanilla: Mix in 1 large room temperature egg and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  3. Combine dry ingredients: Whisk together 2 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  4. Mix dry into wet: Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter-sugar mixture, mixing on low speed or folding gently until just combined. Chill dough 15–20 minutes if too sticky.
  5. Roll and cut: Lightly flour surface and rolling pin. Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut witch hat shapes using cookie cutter and place on lined baking sheet about 1 inch apart.
  6. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake cookies for 10–12 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft.
  7. Cool: Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Prepare purple buttercream: Beat 1/2 cup softened butter until creamy. Gradually add 2 1/2 cups sifted powdered sugar, alternating with 2 tablespoons milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix until smooth. Add gel food coloring until desired purple shade is reached.
  9. Frost and decorate: Spread or pipe purple buttercream onto cooled cookies, shaping frosting to mimic witch hat cones. Use black decorating gel or melted chocolate to pipe hat brims. Add sprinkles or edible glitter if desired.
  10. Set frosting: Let cookies sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to allow frosting to set before serving or packaging.

Notes

Do not overmix dough after adding flour to keep cookies tender. Chill dough if sticky for easier rolling and cutting. Use gel food coloring to avoid runny frosting. Piping frosting helps create precise witch hat shapes. Slightly underbake cookies for a soft center with crisp edges. Dough can be refrigerated up to 48 hours before baking. Frosting can be chilled 10 minutes before application for smoother texture.
