A quick and easy Halloween sangria made with red wine, apple cider, and caramel-coated apple slices. This spooky, crowd-pleasing cocktail comes together in under 10 minutes and tastes like a cozy autumn night.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 bottle (750 ml) dry red wine (Merlot or Zinfandel recommended)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) apple cider (unfiltered preferred)
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) caramel sauce (plus 2 tablespoons for coating apples)
  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) apple brandy or bourbon (optional)
  • 1 large apple (Honeycrisp or Fuji), thinly sliced
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes (optional)
  • Optional garnish: dried orange slices, star anise, fresh cranberries

Instructions

  1. Wash and core the apple, then slice thinly (about 1/4-inch thick). Place slices in a shallow bowl and drizzle with 2 tablespoons of caramel sauce. Toss gently to coat and let sit for 5 minutes.
  2. In a large pitcher (at least 1.5 quarts), combine the red wine, apple cider, remaining caramel sauce (about 6 tablespoons), and apple brandy or bourbon (if using). Stir until caramel is fully dissolved.
  3. Add the cinnamon sticks and stir gently.
  4. Gently drop the caramel-coated apple slices into the pitcher, distributing evenly.
  5. If serving immediately, add ice cubes and stir. If making ahead, refrigerate without ice for at least 30 minutes (up to 4 hours). Serve in glasses, ensuring each gets apple slices and a cinnamon stick. Garnish as desired.

Notes

For best results, make a few hours ahead to let flavors meld. Remove apple slices after 1 day if storing leftovers. Can be served warm by gently heating on the stovetop. For a non-alcoholic version, use non-alcoholic red wine or tart cherry juice and skip the brandy.
