Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium pear or apple (halved, core removed)
  • 2 candy eyes (or small dots of cream cheese with black sesame seeds)
  • 1 small triangle of cheddar cheese
  • 1 small piece of red bell pepper
  • 2 pretzel sticks (broken to about 2 inches each)
  • 1/2 cup cheddar cheese cubes (1/2-inch)
  • 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese cubes (1/2-inch)
  • 1/2 cup Colby Jack cheese cubes (1/2-inch)
  • 1/2 cup red seedless grapes
  • 1/2 cup green seedless grapes
  • 1/2 cup strawberries (hulled and halved or quartered)
  • 1/4 cup blueberries
  • 1/4 cup cherry tomatoes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup cucumber slices (crinkle-cut optional)
  • 1/2 cup whole-grain crackers (e.g., Annie’s or Simple Mills)
  • 1/2 cup pretzel twists or mini pretzels
  • Optional: turkey-shaped cheese slices
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons dark chocolate chips
  • Optional: 1/4 cup hummus or yogurt dip

Instructions

  1. Prep your ingredients (5 minutes): Wash all fruit and pat dry. Cut cheese into 1/2-inch cubes. Hull and halve strawberries. Slice cucumber into rounds. Have everything ready in small bowls before you start arranging.
  2. Create the turkey body (2 minutes): Place the halved pear or apple cut-side down in the center of your board. This is the turkey’s body. Make sure it’s stable — if it wobbles, trim a tiny slice off the bottom to create a flat surface.
  3. Add the face details (2 minutes): Stick the candy eyes onto the pear using a tiny dab of cream cheese or hummus as ‘glue.’ Place the cheddar triangle just below the eyes for the beak. Add the red bell pepper piece under the beak for the wattle. Place two pretzel sticks at the bottom of the pear for legs, pointing outward.
  4. Build the tail feathers (5 minutes): Starting from the back of the pear, arrange your ingredients in a fan shape. Create rows: first a row of cheese cubes, then a row of red grapes, then strawberries, then green grapes, and so on. Overlap them slightly so no empty spaces show.
  5. Fill in the gaps (3 minutes): Use blueberries, cucumber slices, and cherry tomatoes to fill any spaces between the larger pieces. Tuck crackers and pretzels around the edges of the board for extra crunch.
  6. Add the finishing touches (1 minute): If using a dip, place the small bowl near the turkey’s side. Sprinkle a few dark chocolate chips around for a little surprise.

Notes

For stability, trim a tiny slice off the bottom of the pear or apple to prevent rolling. To prevent browning, spritz the pear or apple with lemon juice. Assemble the board just before serving for the freshest look. If making ahead, prep ingredients separately and assemble the morning of the event. Keep the board refrigerated if not serving immediately, and take it out 10-15 minutes before serving.
