These festive red velvet crinkle cookies are soft, chewy, and fudgy with a beautiful crackled top dusted with powdered sugar. Made with simple ingredients and no chilling required, they come together in about 30 minutes and are perfect for holiday cookie swaps, parties, and gift plates.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon red gel food coloring
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for rolling, plus more for refreshing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl halfway through.
  3. Beat in the egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract until well combined. The mixture might look slightly curdled.
  4. Add the red gel food coloring and mix until the dough is uniformly red.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed or folding by hand until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. If the dough feels too sticky, chill it in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Scoop out about 1.5 tablespoons of dough and roll into a smooth ball between your palms.
  9. Roll each dough ball generously in powdered sugar, coating thickly. Place on prepared baking sheets, spacing about 2 inches apart.
  10. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies should look puffed and cracked, with edges set but centers still slightly soft.
  11. Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best crinkle effect, roll dough balls in powdered sugar immediately before baking. Gel food coloring is essential for proper texture and color. If using dark baking sheets, reduce oven temperature by 25°F. Cookies taste even better the next day.
